Derek is born and raised in San Francisco. His parents had a business that imported clothes from Asia while his grandparents ran a successful garment factory in San Francisco that specialized in bridal and wedding dresses. Fashion is a part of Derek’s life since he was young.
Derek spent six months studying art at the Academy of Art University and soon found himself at the Parsons School of Design in New York. Upon graduation, he joined Michael Kors and soon served as Tod’s Creative Director for the brand’s ready-to-wear line. In 2003, Derek launched his own label called Derek Lam. A brand which will be known for relaxed yet elegant vibes. He debuted at the New York Fashion Week in September 2003. Retailers such as Saks, Bergdorf Goodman, and Barneys quickly snapped up his first collections. In 2005, Lam won the CFDA Perry Ellis Swarovski Award for new designers.
Eight years after the launch of his first label, Derek Lam decided to expand his brand to include a diffusion line. In June 2011, Derek launched his second label called Derek Lam 10 Crosby. Derek Lam 10 Crosby is lower-priced, casual brand which has an unpretentious, casual sporty vibe. Derek is still faithful to his sophisticated and detailed aesthetic but Derek Lam 10 Crosby more accessible to many women. "I am interested in what it means to live a contemporary life," says Derek. "I always consider what will work for women at this moment, and to me this moment is about luxury without formality."
Derek Lam 10 Crosby is named after the address of the Derek Lam International, LLC headquarters in downtown Manhattan, where Derek finds much of his inspiration for the new label. This line has a younger spirit than Derek's first label, and he strove to incorporate things that he could not use in his main collections. Derek Lam 10 Crosby has more sensible fabrics for every day wear, slouchier shapes, prints, and vivid colors that brings out a young vibrant vibe.
Not all diffusion lines are successful, but Derek Lam 10 Crosby has grown rapidly and accounts for 60 percent of the Derek’s business according to a rep for the company. In addition to the store, the line has also expanded to include shoes and handbags. Its success owes partly to its broad appeal and easy-to-wear pieces.
In February 2010, Derek Lam launched an e-commerce website selling the collections of ready-to-wear and accessories. In 2015, a fragrance collection was launched under the Derek Lam 10 Crosby brand.
